Frequently asked questions
Immediately shut off the main water valve to stop the flow and prevent structural damage. Once the water is off, open the lowest faucets in the house to drain the remaining water from the system. Turn off your water heater and electrical breakers if water is near outlets. Document the damage for insurance purposes and call an emergency plumber for a permanent pipe repair.
If the water heater is leaking from the bottom of the tank, it indicates internal corrosion and a high risk of a total tank failure, which can flood your home in minutes. You should not wait. Shut off the cold water supply valve above the unit and turn off the gas or power. If it is leaking from a valve or pipe on top, it may be a minor repair, but a tank leak requires emergency replacement.
Water appearing through floors or baseboards without a visible source is often a slab leak—a break in the copper or PEX water lines running under your concrete foundation. Signs include hot spots on the floor, a running meter when no water is in use, or a sudden spike in your utility bill. This requires electronic leak detection to locate the break without unnecessarily tearing up your flooring.
A single clogged toilet is a "standard" repair unless it is the only toilet in the home or if it is overflowing and cannot be stopped by the shut-off valve. However, if multiple toilets or drains are backing up simultaneously, you have a main sewer line emergency. In these cases, stop using all water immediately to prevent sewage from backing up into tubs and showers.
If a plunger fails, the clog is likely composed of hardened cooking grease or hair deep within the P-trap or the sanitary tee. Avoid chemical cleaners, as they can corrode older pipes and trap toxic standing water. Instead, use a hand auger (drain snake) to physically break the obstruction. If multiple drains are slow, the blockage may be in your main sewer line.
Heavy rainfall in Oklahoma often causes tree root intrusion into sewer lines, as roots seek moisture through small cracks. When the ground becomes saturated, external debris can also enter the line. If your drains gurgle or back up during storms, it usually indicates a partial blockage or a cracked sewer pipe that is being overwhelmed by the increased water volume.
Bubbling or "gurgling" in a toilet while other fixtures are draining is a classic sign of a blocked sewer vent or a mainline clog. This happens because air is trapped in the pipes and is forcing its way out through the nearest trap. This is a "warning sign" of an impending sewage backup and should be inspected with a video camera immediately.
While a drain snake is effective for punching a hole through a solid clog, hydro jetting is superior for long-term maintenance because it "scours" the pipe walls clean. It removes grease buildup and scale that snakes leave behind. For older Oklahoma homes with cast iron or clay pipes, a professional inspection is required first to ensure the pipe's structural integrity can handle the high-pressure water.
Most liquid drain cleaners use sulfuric acid or lye, which creates an exothermic (heat-producing) reaction. This heat can soften or deform PVC pipes and kill the essential bacteria in septic systems, leading to expensive tank failures. For a safer alternative, use an enzyme-based cleaner or a mechanical drain snake to protect your home's plumbing longevity.
